You can make a sandstone block into sandstone dust.
And melt that sandstone dust into a sandstone ingot!
With that sandstone ingot you can make all of the tools:
SandStone Pickaxe
SandStone Axe
SandStone Shovel
SandStone Hoe
And of course
SandStone Sword
All of the tools are as strong as iron.
